So, this has been an argument for many, "are you technically a virgin if you never had vaginal sex but performed/received oral sex?" That is still up for debate but I read a recent study which basically tried to "undercut the notion that many engage in oral sex rather than intercource to stay 'technically' virgins."

Well, the study was actually pretty old but it was only released recently. It was conducted in 2002 with 2,271 male and females age 15-19.

It was stated, "The researchers found about 55 percent of the teens said they had engaged in oral sex but that this practice was far more common among those who also had engaged in vaginal sex," and "Teens said they began vaginal and oral sex at roughly the same time -- by six months after first vaginal intercourse, 82 percent had also engaged in oral sex, according to the study."

Laura Lindberg, who led the study, mentions "There is a widespread belief that teens engage in nonvaginal forms of sex, especially oral sex, as a way to be sexually active while still claiming that, technically, they are virgins."

And goes on to say, "However, our research shows that this supposed substitution of oral sex for vaginal sex is largely a myth. There is no good evidence that teens who have not had intercourse engage in oral sex with a series of partners."

Well, right of the bat the stats and statements don't prove anything. First of all, you can't discharge these "myths" with studies that are six years old. I can tell you for a fact that sexuality, especially in teens, have changed drastically since then. Those statements are almost equivalent to saying most teens practice abstinence... which is becoming less and less realistic as time goes on.

So, to answer the question "are you still a virign if you had oral sex?" Well, that is still up for debate. But according to the definition of "sex" it states, "either the male or female division of a species, esp. as differentiated with reference to the reproductive functions."

If you base it on that definition, then technically, you are still a virgin if you participate in oral sex but not vaginal.
