Yet another sex sting, but don’t worry, this time it doesn’t involve a Senator or airport bathrooms. This time, it was just a Senate staff employee.

James Michael McHaney, 28-year-old scheduler to Democrat Sen. Maria Cantwell of Washington, was arrested by the FBI this past Friday on charges that he arranged to have sex with what he thought was a 13-year-old boy.

Now that airport bathroom stint doesn’t seem as bad now, huh? Well, they’re both bad.

And how did he get caught? On the internet, of course. After all the scandals and stories about online predators, wouldn’t someone like a Senate staff employee know better?

Apparently, not.

Honestly, what is wrong with these people? I would assume you have to be pretty well-educated to work as a Senate staff, but if you think you won’t get caught, especially on the internet, you have a rude awakening headed your way.

But according to a federal court document, the cooperating witness for the FBI online had asked McHaney if he would like to have anal sex with the child. McHaney replied, “I’ll be there.”

He was arrested an hour later in the “lobby of a predetermined location” and charged with attempted child exploitation.

This is the same person who did advanced work for the 2004 presidential campaigns for both former Rep. Dick Gephardt and Sen. John Kerry. And who would expect this to happen? Probably nobody.

“Everybody – we’re totally shocked. You don’t expect anybody to do this,” said a stunned fellow Democratic politico.

McHaney was fired immediately after Cantwell’s office found out about the arrest.

What? Did you think he would keep his job after this? What does he look like? A Senator of Idaho or something?
