Many Teens Don’t Know the Sex Laws – I’m Sure Adults Don’t Either

Sex laws or laws in general, I’m sure everyone does not know ALL of them, particularly teens. I mean, why would they? It’s not like health/sex educators or anything are teaching them, yet, the ‘law’ is always right there prosecuting them.

Teen Sex Laws behind barsNow, I’m sure many people know that the law varies within different states and are probably completely different outside the U.S., but how many of us read every single law by state? You too, huh? Well, I know I don’t. Although, now I feel I might just have to before I decide to move.

For example, many people don’t know that it’s a crime for teenagers to have sex, even if they’re close in age. And if you read some of my other articles like Minors, Sex = Unjust Punishment, Sex and Teens: The Law is Hypocritical, Sex, Teens and ‘The Law’: Update, you’d know how I felt about that.

And if you don’t ever get a chance to read it, I’ll hate you… okay, you called my bluff, I won’t. But let’s say I don’t agree with the teenage sex laws. Well, not all of them at least.

Some legal experts say that it is rare for prosecutors to seek charges for consensual teenage sex, though it does happen. Again, feel free to read Minors, Sex = Unjust Punishment, Sex and Teens: The Law is Hypocritical, Sex, Teens and ‘The Law’: Update as I show it DOES happen, more recently, Genarlow Wilson was released from jail after serving a couple years for having oral sex with a fellow teenager two years younger.

The fact of the matter is, when a teenager does get prosecuted for having consensual sex with another teenager, they end up facing the same type of public stigma a dangerous sex predator goes through. Now is that really fair?

Throughout the country, the ages of consent range from 14 to 18. So, consensual teenage sex is often a crime? Then why is the average age of losing virginity around 16-years-old? And the funny part of all of this, I’m sure the lawmakers fall under those statistics as well.

“We do a disgraceful job of educating kids about the very real consequences that they face,” said J. Tom Morgan, a former DeKalb County district attorney who has a new book coming out titled “Ignorance is No Defense: A Teenager Guide to Georgia Law.”

I may just have to buy that book and read it!

But Morgan adds, “If society is going to punish them as adults, then society ought to educate them.”
Some states have recently revised their laws so sexually active teenagers don’t end up falling in the same category as child molesters.

Georgia revised theirs, just read Minors, Sex = Unjust Punishment, Sex and Teens: The Law is Hypocritical, Sex, Teens and ‘The Law’: Update and Wilson’s story.

Indiana changed theirs so that teens in “dating relationships” would not be prosecuted. Now, those of you with “friends with benefits” might want to reconsider, huh?

Connecticut changed its law to stop prosecuting teens if the age gap is three years or less.

And Texas changed the way it classifies sex offenders so that those teens will no longer have to register.

Hey, I’ve been considered an adult for years now and I still don’t know all these laws. And I’m sure I’m not the only one.
