People are having sex at a younger age, obviously not in-love but probably due to what they see and hear around them in their daily lives. And friends play a major role in that.
Face it, we all pick our friends based on similar interests and how good we get along with each other. So in the long run, you're thinking just like they do. Now I'm not saying peer pressure is the cause of it, but in some cases, it is. What I'm saying is some people see things and want to do the same. I'm sure there's plenty of reasons why, everyone is their own individual. Maybe they feel left out? The odd person out? I'm not fully sure. But a survey that was done by researchers at the University of Illinois, compares sexual behavior and attitudes among 1,350 participants. Here's what they found out:
- The study found that teens whose friends had intercourse without a condom were more likely to have intercourse without a condom over the following year
- Teens with friends who believe that sex can have undesirable consequences were less likely to have intercourse without a condom over the following year
- The effect of friends' attitudes on sexual behavior was stronger in girls than in boys
- teens tend to select new friends with sexual attitudes that are similar to their own
Make sure you know who your real friends are or have very strong will power. I've seen a lot of people who rushed into sex because they were the only person in their group of friends to still be a virgin. That's not a bad thing. Don't fall into that indirect peer pressure. Because people are losing their virginities before they're even able to drive!
Young men and women start losing their virginity in their mid-to-early teens. I read this article from azcentral.com stating "A new survey shows four out of 10 city kids say they have had intercourse before age 14, and have engaged in oral and even anal sex by 17."
In addition, it says "The study showed that 42 percent had engaged in vaginal intercourse by the age of 14. About 14 percent of kids said they had sex before the age of 13, a 9 percent jump from a similar survey by the Centers for Disease Control in 1995."
Take it or leave it. But at a younger age, your friends will be the key to your sex life. Again, make sure you know who your real friends are.
